Stopwatches have many uses with the primary function being to count time. You will most commonly see athletes, coaches and even whole athletic teams using them. There is more than one type of stopwatch and read on for more information.
A stopwatch is basically just a hand held device that’s used as a timer for various sports activities. From track & field activities, swimming, motor & car racing, etc, this kind of watch is highly useful for evaluation during training sessions.
Most stopwatches have to be started manually when an event starts and then manually stopped when it is over with. This is done when, for example, for runners of a certain distance. When the run starts the stopwatch is started and counts time, but as soon as the finish line has been reached the stop button is pushed and you have the exact time the runner needed for the given distance. This is often how trainers and coaches assess performance and progress of athletes.
Stopwatches can be either analog or digital and it usually is similar to a regular pocket watch. However, there are also stopwatches that can be worn on the wrist. The large clocks used in sports arenas or stadiums, such as for hockey or basketball games, are known as stop clocks.
When it comes down to accuracy then the digital stopwatch is the one. The analog stopwatch is commonly used as a gift for either the coach or trainer when one kind or another sport championship has been won. It is an attractive gift designed in silver casings.
Although there are different designs and models of stopwatches available, the modern stopwatches can come with a lot of functions, features and modes. This still does not make the traditional stopwatch useless, though. In fact, the standard stopwatch is still able to serve its purpose and is capable of countdowns, recording running times and timing laps. The modern stopwatches do have the advantage of having easier access and higher accuracy, on top of the basic functions of tracking laps times and calculating evaluations.
Some models are capable of storing up to 50 lap times, whereas other stopwatches can only save up to 10. Some of the digital stopwatches also calculate the speed and time if you know what the distance of a lane or track is. All you have to do is enter the distance and the stopwatch will do the rest, like evaluating previous records for a particular athlete and then providing you with the average time in minutes or seconds that is taken to cover the entered distance.
First and foremost the stopwatch’s number one function is to be a countdown timer and this is achieved by counting down to zero and entering a certain amount of time and then pressing a button. They are commonly used by coaches, trainers and athletes.
